Rider Inspiration: Caleb Van Der Werf

How long have you been riding a bike?

2 Years

Tell us something inspiring and/or unique about yourself that relates to cycling.

I started cycling because my car broke and I had to get to a dealership to buy a new one. I dug up an old (and much too small) road bike in the garage, pumped up the tires and rode 12 miles to downtown Rochester to pick up a truck. A few months later I bought a new bike to have as backup transportation but it quickly became primary transportation.

What is the biggest accomplishment you’ve made on a bike?

100km Ride on a Fixie.

What’s the biggest challenge you faced with regards to cycling and how did you overcome it?

Last year I got in an accident with a car and broke my wrist. I couldn’t ride for a while and it was intimidating to go back out there and start riding on the road again. 5 weeks after the accident I started riding again and I rode a fat bike everywhere for a several weeks. Flat bars, wide tires, and slower speeds made it easier to get back into cycling on the road. Once I was feeling confident again and my wrist was ready for drop bars I got back out on my fast bike. It took time but as a result I am more focused than ever when riding and more aware of all the potential threats on the road.
