Rider Inspiration: Mary and Jay Sell

How long have you been riding a bike?

10 years

Tell us something inspiring and/or unique about yourself that relates to cycling.

This year we purchased a cargo bike for riding with our kids that is an e-assist and it has been a life changer. For a few years we used a burley, but when our daughter was born we found it was too heavy to carry two kids in. We only use our car a few times a month and love getting around town by bike!

What is the biggest accomplishment you’ve made on a bike?

We regularily get a full grocery load (cat litter / beer – all the essentials) with both kids in the bike. I think day to day living with 2 kids getting around mostly by bike is viewed by others as a big deal, to us it just normal and how we get around.

What’s the biggest challenge you faced with regards to cycling and how did you overcome it?

Our infrastructure could really use a shot in the arm, that’s for sure. We would love an all ages and abilities network so that all families can safely get around Raleigh in a more sustainable way. Our way around that to date has been taking neighborhood streets, but that obviously limits us to not being able to go to some locations. We’re inspired by the work Oaks and Spokes does to help advance that conversation and move these issues forward.
