August Advocacy Update

The Advocacy Committee skipped its July meeting because more than half of our regular advocacy committee attendees were traveling. They returned with stories about bike infrastructure around the world – in Heidelberg, Germany, Oslo, Norway, Montreal, Quebec, and more. Filled with inspiration and hope for a more bike-able Raleigh, we re-convened on August 6th  😉

  • We discussed our City Council Candidate Questionnaire about bicycle infrastructure, which has already been filled out by 17 candidates. We are building a page on our website to share the candidates’ responses with voters on bikes.
  • We are also planning to host a Bike to Vote ride at the beginning of early voting.
  • We are concerned about the lack or pedestrian / bike routes in the planned ‘improvements’ to roads around Crabtree Mall, and will be attending a community meeting to discuss whether there is any chance the plans can be amended before they are built.
  • We will organize a letter-writing event to demonstrate community opposition to the RDU quarry.
  • We want to learn how other cities in North Carolina like Durham and Charlotte adopted their Vision Zero plans, and whether this might be a good goal for Raleigh.

Yes, we have lots of plans and aspirations. Give a shout at advocacy-committee@oaksandspokes.com if you want to help with any of these upcoming projects, have other ideas to make Raleigh a better place, or just want to learn more!

Are next meeting is on September 3rd at HQ Raleigh, 310 S Harrington St. from 6:30 pm – 8 pm. E-mail chris@oaksandspokes.com for more information.
