From Bike Month to Cranksgiving

Annual Events

January

Member Party and Board Elections

Every winter Oaks and Spokes hosts a party to bring together our board and community members. We reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, conduct annual board elections, and hear updates from the City of Raleigh, Vision Zero, and other community partners. All members are welcome to attend, and if you’re not a member, you can become one here

We had a blast this year at the January 20, 2023 party! The presentations from guest speakers, information on Board candidates, and a summary of elections results can be found on our website here.

May

Bike Month

Every May Oaks and Spokes celebrates national bike month by hosting and partnering with local organizations and businesses to put on dozens of bike friendly events throughout the May. These events include a Downtown Raleigh mural ride, community advocacy meeting, bike-in movie, Bike, Walk, and Roll to School Day, Marbles Bike Rodeo, an alley cat, and our Light Up The Night ride. Bike month is fun, free, and open to everyone!

May

Bike & Roll to School Day

National Bike & Roll to School Day invites participants to celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit. Participation is free, and can happen anytime during the month of May. The events can include on campus activities for schools who don’t have safe routes available for students. The goal of these events are to get kids moving, and to ditch the carpool line.

Check to see if your school is registered by visiting the Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day’s website here. If your school isn’t on the list, send us an email to srts@oaksandspokes.com for help planning your own event!

October

Crank for a Cause

“Crank for a Cause” serves as the anchor event of our Fall Bike Fest and represents Oaks and Spokes’ annual fundraiser and membership drive! We organize a fun 12-mile no-drop bike ride that starts at Crank Arm Brewing, stops at Trophy on Maywood, proceeds to Raleigh Brewing Company, and then returns to Crank Arm. Throughout the afternoon, several groups will depart at different times, each led by local advocates, Oaks and Spokes members, and community leaders. Every registered participant will receive limited edition Oaks and Spokes gear, created in collaboration with Munjo Munjo! Join us on October 8, 2023! You’ll undoubtedly have a blast, all while contributing to raising funds that support Oaks and Spokes’ mission of fostering a community of people on bikes and accelerating advocacy for bicycle infrastructure and sustainable transportation. Furthermore, all participants are automatically entered into a raffle for a chance to win fantastic swag from our sponsors.

October

Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day

Walk & Roll to School Day is an annual event that engages communities from across the country (and around the world!) in walking and rolling to school on the same day. It originated in 1997 as a one-day initiative. Participation is free and can occur at any time during the month of October. These events may involve on-campus activities for schools that lack safe routes for students. The primary objective of these events is to encourage kids to be active and reduce dependence on carpooling.

In 2023, Walk and Roll to School Day is scheduled for October 4th. Confirm your school’s registration by visiting the Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day website here. If your school is not listed, reach out to us via email at srts@oaksandspokes.com for assistance in planning your own event!

November

Cranksgiving

Cranksgiving is an annual nationwide food drive on two wheels! It is part food drive, part bike ride, and part scavenger hunt. Raleigh bicyclists will set off from Crank Arm Brewing, pedal to local grocery stores, shop for food and toiletries, and return with their haul to Crank Arm. Subsequently, we donate all the collected items to charity! Participants are equipped with a map of nearby stopping points and a list of the most crucial items in demand.

Join us on November 19th, 2023!
